The downloaded PDF also lists all three clearly for reference. An important distinction to keep in mind: in Vedic astrology, 'Rasi' specifically means the Moon's sign at birth — not the Sun's sign.

If someone tells you your 'star sign is Aries' based on your April birthday (Western astrology), your Vedic Rasi is completely independent of that.

It is determined by where the Moon was on your birth date and time. Since the Moon changes signs every 2.5 days, two people born on the same date but on different years can have completely different Rasis. If you know your birth nakshatra but not your rasi, the mapping is direct and fixed.

Each rasi spans exactly 2.25 nakshatras. For example: Mesham (Aries) contains Ashwini, Bharani, and the first pada of Krittika.

Rishabam (Taurus) contains the remaining three padas of Krittika, all of Rohini, and the first two padas of Mrigashira. This pattern continues uniformly through all 27 nakshatras and 12 rasis.

Knowing the nakshatra thus immediately tells you the rasi. Old family horoscope documents are another source. In any South Indian jathagam drawn by a traditional astrologer, the words 'Janma Rasi' or simply 'Rasi' are written with the rasi name.
